What is a rare disorder?

In Aotearoa New Zealand a disorder is considered rare when it affects fewer than or equal to 1 in 2,000 people.

An ultra-rare disorder is one that affects fewer than or equal to 1 in 50,000 persons.

Rare disorders include, but are not limited to, genetic disorders, cancers, infectious disorders,
poisonings, immune-related disorders, idiopathic disorders, and undetermined conditions
that are rare.

Our Collective

Rare Disorders NZ is the collective voice of all people living with a rare disorder and their whānau. Our rare collective is made up of more than 150 disorder-specific support groups. Our work is informed by the issues important to our collective, and we work together to improve healthcare and wellbeing for everyone living with a rare health condition in New Zealand.
