Patient advocacy organisations, including Rare Disorders NZ, were invited to attend the release of Associate Health Minister David Seymour’s letter of expectation to Pharmac’s new Chair Paula Bennett.

The letter sets out the Miniter’s expectations of what he would like to see Pharmac focus its efforts on for the remainder of 2023/24 and for 2024/25.

Rare Disorders NZ Chief Executive Chris Higgins brought attention to the fact the letter stipulates an expectation for Pharmac to work with the Manatū Hauora | Ministry of Health on the development of the Rare Disorders Strategy, yet this work has already been completed. Both the Minister and Chair expressed their intent to look at how Pharmac can address some of the challenges related to rare disorder patients accessing medicines.
